Series LA Amplifier Upgrades
Front Panel Lamps We can furnish either the traditional incandescent lamps or cool white LED
lamps. The LED lamps do cost a lot more although they do last longer and provide softer (different) illumination of the meter scales.
See the image to the right – the top RF deck has the incandescent lamps installed.
Cooling Blowers The typical blower package (PN LL0117) is shown in the images to the right. The 60CFM blower in the image is a now obsolete part used on pre-2006 production and replaced with a 49CFM model (seen in the image below – right). Both parts are sufficiently rated for full output SSB, CW and digital operation when, used at sea level and at typical amateur radio duty cycles. These blowers exhibit acceptable noise levels during full speed (transmit) operation and quiet during idle/receive time (assuming that your RF deck is equipped with the dual speed feature). Order PN LL0117 The shipping weight is approximately 5 lbs. Price is $175.00 + shipping.
The image to the right shows the post 2006 production 49CFM blower -note the aluminum end plate on the motor.
In the event that the amplifier is used at an above sea level location or with duty cycles exceeding typical amateur use, we suggest an upgrade to the 72CFM blower package. The larger capacity blower is physically larger – slightly taller but 1″ wider with the motor extending past the side of the amplifier’s chassis cover. It also exhibits increased operational noise as it moves more air. Order PN 00010295 The shipping weight is approximately 5.5 lbs. Price is $245.00 + shipping.
Series PS High Voltage Power Supply Upgrades
Replacement electrolytic capacitor kit Click here to link to the Spare Parts page The high voltage filter capacitors may fail based on age and operating conditions. Newer Series PS units include 8 or 9 snap-in type capacitors while the older models use a physically larger, screw terminal type. The replacement capacitor kit includes snap-in type mounting and are a direct replacement for late model PS circuit boards. These snap-in capacitors may be fitted to the older, screw terminal circuit boards with a bit of “Ham” ingenuity and short lengths of solid copper wire. Remember, all repair work performed by the owner/user is done at their own risk.

Internal cooling fan kit This fan can be easily added to the PS chassis floor to enable enhanced cooling of the filter capacitors and diodes during extended key down duty cycles. Assembly requires adding/enlarging holes to accommodate the mounting standoffs/screws and connecting the ring lugs to the power transformer primary terminal board and to the chassis ground. The kit includes the fan, mounting standoffs/hardware and electrical wiring. Order PN 00004583 The shipping weight is approximately 1.5 lbs. Price is $47.25 + shipping.
The images to the left show the Internal Cooling Fan Assembly (Order PN 00004583) mounted to the PS-70 chassis floor. It’s ground wire terminal is fastened in between the chassis and the standoff (make sure that the chassis surface is clean and free from paint or corrosion). The power wires are routed along side of the power transformer and their terminals are connected to the “0” and “240” volt transformer taps. With the fan’s label facing up, the airflow will flow up.
Newer PS-70 enclosures include four pre-punched #6 clearance holes. If you are installing this fan assembly in an older chassis, simply drill the four holes in-between the existing cooling holes as shown in the images to the left. The mounting holes will be drilled exactly 3.25″ (82.5 mm) center to center.
External cooling fan kit This fan can be easily added to the PS perforated lid to enable enhanced cooling of the power supply during extended key down duty cycles. Assembly requires drilling a hole for the rubber grommet, adding/enlarging holes to accommodate the mounting screws and connecting the ring lugs to the power transformer primary terminal board and to the chassis ground. The kit includes the fan, mounting hardware and electrical wiring. Order PN 00001975The shipping weight is approximately 2 lbs.Price is $65.50 + shipping.
